Paddling with the Dragontinis

On Sunday, June 5th five paddlers from the Sunshine Coast Dragon Boat Club went to Garden Bay and joined the Dragontinis Team for their regular Sunday afternoon paddle. Rudy Van Egdom, as steersman for both the Sea Gals Team and the Dragontinis, did a great job of leading the tour around Pender Harbour. Darlene Kerfoot & husband Dale shadowed us in their sailboat to make sure we behaved ourselves - thank you for taking the pictures Darlene. After a great paddle we visited the Grasshopper Pub and enjoyed the view, good company and some much needed liquid refreshment. Thank you Dragontinis for making us feel so welcomed.

Women's False Creek Regatta

On May 28th the Sunshine Coast Dragon Boat Club sent two teams to participate in the False Creek Women's Regatta: The Sunshine Dragons Abreast Team and The Sea Gals. In keeping with tradition both teams were all decked out in costumes. The Sunshine Dragons Abreast Team were a sight in their pink Burlesque Dancer costumes and The Sea Gals won third place for their Pirate Queen costumes. The weather was great with the rain holding off and the sun appearing later in the day. Each team participated in four 500 meter races and many, many thanks to Rudy Van Egdom for steering for both team.

MacKenzie Mussels

On May 14th The MacKenzie Mussels participated in the False Creek Mixed Regatta. Conditions were challenging with lots of wind and heavy currents. The Mussels paddled in 5 races and were a tired but happy crew. Well done, Mussels.

Club Members Vote Yes for the Mini Dragon Boat

Since April 4th the Sunshine Coast Dragon Boat Club has had the loan of a ten-man mini dragon boat. During the last six weeks all teams have had the opportunity to try this smaller boat. It has come in handy when either too many or too few paddlers want to paddle at the same time. This week all club members had the opportunity to vote on whether or not the club should purchase one of these boats. The vote was overwhelmingly in favour of adding to our fleet which consists of the 'Sir John' and the 'Lady Sally'. Plans will now begin for fundraising, insurance, storage, and the naming of the new boat.

Rudy Van Egdom

Congratulations to Rudy Van Egdom for taking on the role of head steersperson. A big thank you to John Bayzand for his past contribution in the role. John will still be steering for the McKenzie Mussels Team providing his expertise as steersperson.

Mini Dragon Boat Tryout

On a cold and rainy Sunday, April 4th club members had chance to see a ten-man mini dragon boat as it passed through Davis Bay on the way to McKenzie Marina in Porpoise Bay. Over the next two months all club members will have a chance to tryout the new boat and decide if the club will start fund raising towards a goal of purchasing one of these smaller boats.

Wine and Cheese

On Sunday, April 17 all Club Members were invited to a wine and cheese get together and fundraiser for the local food bank. Members enjoyed a glass wine and snacks and had a chance to visit with fellow paddlers. Congratulations to Linda Dawson and Licia Paddison who won the door prizes. $455 and several baskets of food were collected for the Sechelt Food Bank. Thank you to everyone who participated and many thanks to Bev Zacharias for hosting and Darlene Kerfoot for organizing such a fun event. Thank you to all Club Team Leaders who met prior to the event. We had great participation and lots of good ideas were exchanged.
